The "Complete Dictionary of Sexology" defines fellatio as "Stimulation of the penis with the lips, mouth, or tongue by a male or female partner." The definition continues, "Fellatio, a form of oral sex, may or may not be continued to orgasm and ejaculation, and the partner may or may not swallow the ejaculate." The dictionary further states, "Fellatio is considered by sexologists to be a normal part of love play, but some legal and religious codes may make it unlawful or sinful, treating it as an unnatural act or nonprocreative."

Fellatio receives no clear biblical mention in either the Old or the New Testaments. However, in 1012 a famous German bishop named Burchard of Worms imposed a penance on those women who performed oral sex. In his castigation, he sternly wrote:

Have you swallowed your husband's semen in the hope that because of your diabolical deed he might burn all the more with love and desire for you? If you have done this, you should do penance for seven years on legitimate holy days.

Today, the giving and receiving of oral pleasures is considered one of the most intimate and erotic acts that can be exchanged within a loving adult relationship. The word fellatio comes from the classic Latin word fello, meaning "to suck the teat (tit)." The common term blow-job is a misnomer, or, according to Roger Libby in SEX from Aah to Zipper, this term is an oxymoron, ". . . since it is neither blowing nor a job!"

No one seems to know for sure where the term blow-job came from, but as sexual terms go, its common understanding and usage are relatively new." It did not begin to appear in slang dictionaries until the mid-1060's, following a film by Andy Warhol titled Blow Job, in which several explicit depictions of the act appeared. Prior to that, its use had been uncommon, being limited to some college men and prostitutes, and an occasional appearance in underground pornography.

In the 1930's, prostitutes would offer to blow off a patron. It is thought that this term was used in the sense of blowing off steam, or finishing something off. However, other linguists believe that the term blow job has gradually evolved from eighteenth century Europe, when prostitutes were called blowers. There is no indication, however, that in the eighteenth century that the act of oral satisfaction was called a blow job, although it is obvious that this was one of the jobs performed by a blower.

The performance of a blow-job has not escaped the pen of the undisciplined writers of limericks. Dr. Birch, who identifies himself as both a sexologist and a limerickologist has written the following bawdy verse that appeared in LIMERICKS FOR LECHERS:

            There once was a hooker who'd gloat,
            Of her specialty giving deep throat.
                    This young belle from the South
                    Had great depth in her mouth,
            But the swallowing caused her to bloat!

Whatever the origin of the word blow job, it is obvious clear that human beings have been orally pleasing each other ever since they discovered that mouth and genitals are both erogenous zones and they fit together quite nicely.
